It&#8217;s not always a clear-cut failure\u2014you can end up with something that&#8217;s quietly spread across systems before you even notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when it comes to recovery, you want more than just copies of data\u2014you want <strong>clarity and confidence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Storage Defender \u2013 Bringing Some Clarity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the things I like about <strong>IBM Storage Defender<\/strong> is that it tries to simplify that picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of treating storage, backup, and detection as separate conversations, it brings them together:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>primary storage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>backup data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>threat signals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>into a single view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that makes a real difference\u2014because when something&#8217;s happening, the last thing you want is to be piecing together information from multiple tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It gives you a clearer sense of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>what&#8217;s happening<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>where the risk is<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and what your recovery options actually look like<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DRS \u2013 Turning Plans Into Something Practical<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The part that really stands out is <strong>DRS (Data Resiliency Service)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it shifts the focus away from infrastructure on its own and asks a much more useful question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;What actually needs to come back for the business to function?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From Individual Components to Real Applications<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You still define <strong>Recovery Groups<\/strong>\u2014collections of related resources like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>VMs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>databases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>storage volumes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But then you take that a step further and define <strong>Applications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And suddenly you&#8217;re not just recovering infrastructure\u2014you&#8217;re recovering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ordering systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>payroll<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>customer services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The things people actually care about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Financial Services Example: Why Application-Level Recovery Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a major retail bank&#8217;s mortgage processing pipeline. It&#8217;s a good example of why application-level thinking changes everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The infrastructure stack includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Customer application portal (intake)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Affordability and credit validation services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Document processing (OCR, automated handling)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Underwriting systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fraud detection service<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fund settlement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, here&#8217;s the thing: <strong>these don&#8217;t all matter equally when you&#8217;re recovering.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With DRS, you define the recovery sequence. You might say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Start first:<\/strong> Underwriting systems and fraud detection (revenue impact + regulatory risk)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Then:<\/strong> Fund settlement (regulatory compliance, audit trail integrity)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Then:<\/strong> Document processing (operational efficiency)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Last:<\/strong> Customer portal (you can handle portal delays longer than you can handle settlement failures)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And critically: <strong>Fraud detection must be online alongside underwriting<\/strong>, because you can&#8217;t process mortgages without simultaneously checking fraud flags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn&#8217;t a backup admin&#8217;s job\u2014this is a business resilience decision. And DRS makes it explicit, testable, and repeatable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In financial services, this shift matters even more.<\/strong> Regulators don&#8217;t care about your infrastructure RPO\/RTO\u2014they care about whether critical services (customer-facing systems, fraud detection, settlement, audit trails) come back in the right order with the right integrity. Storage Defender + DRS helps you prove that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/nas01.tallpaul.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Storage-Statistics-1024x600.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nas01.tallpaul.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Storage-Statistics-1024x600.png 1024w, https:\/\/nas01.tallpaul.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Storage-Statistics-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/nas01.tallpaul.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Storage-Statistics-768x450.png 768w, https:\/\/nas01.tallpaul.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Storage-Statistics.png 1379w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Bit More Structure, A Lot Less Guesswork<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What I really like here is the ability to define:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>dependencies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sequencing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>parallel recovery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So instead of figuring things out under pressure, you&#8217;ve already mapped:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>what needs to happen first<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what can wait<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what depends on what<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It just makes the whole process feel a lot more controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Knowing What&#8217;s Safe to Recover<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another area that&#8217;s improved is how we think about recovery points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s no longer just:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Pick the latest backup and go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s a bit more intelligence around:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>spotting unusual behaviour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>identifying anomalies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>highlighting safer restore points<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t replace good processes\u2014but it definitely supports them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it gives you a bit more confidence when you actually need to make that call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Clean Rooms \u2013 A Safer Way to Recover<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the nicest additions in this space is the idea of <strong>clean room recovery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept is straightforward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recover into an isolated environment first, validate everything, then move back into production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It gives you the chance to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>bring systems online safely<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>check for anything unexpected<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>make sure things behave as expected<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>before exposing production again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where Predatar Fits In \u2013 A Partnership Approach<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve come across <strong>Predatar<\/strong>, this approach will feel pretty familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;ve focused on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>isolated recovery environments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>repeatable recovery workflows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>regular testing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And here&#8217;s what&#8217;s interesting: <strong>IBM and Predatar have partnered<\/strong> to bring complementary benefits together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Matthew Smith outlined in his recent blog post, <a href=\"https:\/\/community.ibm.com\/community\/user\/blogs\/matthew-smith\/2026\/03\/11\/ibm-predatar-join-forces-to-deliver-proof\"><em>&#8220;IBM &amp; Predatar Join Forces to Deliver Proof of Recovery&#8221;<\/em><\/a>, this integration allows us to deliver something that&#8217;s been missing: <strong>proof that your recovery will actually work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Storage Defender handles <strong>early threat detection and unified visibility<\/strong> across storage, backup, and threats.
